In 1958, Rose Pamphyle lives in Saint-Fraimbault with her father, a gruff widower who wants her to marry the son of an area mechanic. In opposition to her father's needs, Rose travels to Lisieux and applies for any job as a secretary for insurance policy agent Louis Échard.
